Davenport

Davenport occupies a stepped Mississippi River setting on the Iowa side of the Quad Cities, where a broad, low alluvial riverfront gives way northward and westward to dissected uplands of the Southern Iowa Drift Plain. Along the Mississippi, the terrain is flat to gently sloping, shaped by floodplain deposits, islands, backwater margins, and river terraces, with the lowest areas near the water lying around 545 ft (166 m). Away from the river, the city rises quickly through short ravines and creek valleys such as Duck Creek and Black Hawk Creek, producing a rolling urban landscape of bluffs, benches, and rounded interfluves. The higher northern and western neighborhoods reach roughly 800 ft (244 m), giving Davenport a noticeable local relief of more than 250 ft (76 m) between the river corridor and the upland margins. Overall, its physical character is defined by the contrast between the open, flood-prone Mississippi bottomlands and the more elevated, loess-mantled, glacially influenced hills that frame the city.
