Das Gelände der Altstadt fällt vom Norden nach Süden und Südwesten in Richtung des Flusslaufes spürbar ab. Dabei ergibt sich eine Höhendifferenz von über 30 Metern. Durch den Schüttungskegel der Sionne wurde die Rhone in einem Bogen leicht in Richtung Südost und von der Altstadt abgedrängt.
