1806 wurde der See um etwa 1,7 Meter abgesenkt, wodurch viel Land gewonnen und die Gefahr von Überschwemmungen reduziert werden konnten. Seither wird die Seehöhe beim Abfluss der Sure (im Aargau Suhre) in Oberkirch künstlich reguliert.
