Finsterwolde, eigenlijk West-Finsterwolde, is van oorsprong een veenontginningsnederzetting en mogelijk al gesticht in de tiende of elfde eeuw. De 2,00 à 3,50 meter hoge keileemrug waarom het dorp nu ligt, moet al eerder bewoond zijn geweest, gezien de vondst van een vuistbijlen en een beitel uit de Vroege Bronstijd. Nederzettingssporen zijn niet gevonden; de hoogtes zijn later overwoekerd door het hoogveen. West-Finsterwolde was het tweelingdorp van Oost-Finsterwolde.
