Das dominierende Gestein ist der Muschelkalk, der hochprozentige, terebratelhaltige Kalksteinbänke bildet. Am dem sich zwischen Greußenheim und Leinach erstreckenden Höhenzug befinden sich in dem etwa 225 Millionen Jahre alten Muschelkalk Versteinerungen von Ceratiten und Perlbooten. Der ursprünglich nah am nördlichen Ausgang des Leinachtals vorbeifließende Main trug als Vorfluter, in den Oberflächenwasser durch die durch Erosion gebildeten Gräben abfloss, zur Entstehung der heutigen Landschaft Leinachs bei. Auf dem Muschelkalk der Leinacher Flur befinden sich Bereiche mit Mainfränkischem Trockenrasen, deren lückiger Aufwuchs zu den ältesten Zeugen unveränderten Aufwuchses seit der letzten Eiszeit gehört. Die in sonnigen, weinbaufähigen Lagen (etwa Kehlberg, Himmelberg, Am Trieb, Steig, Glumpberg und Berg) mit Bodenauflage durch Mähung und Beweidung entstandenen Magerrasen sind inzwischen brachgefallen und verfilzt.
