Vecht
In de Romeinse tijd was de rivier bekend onder de naam Fectio. Het meest zuidelijke stroomgebied kenmerkte zich door de afsplitsing van de Vecht van de toenmalige Rijn ter hoogte van het Romeinse fort Fectio. Die splitsing verschoof in de loop der tijd enkele kilometers naar het noorden of wellicht zelfs bij het fort Traiectum. Naast dat fort woonde inheemse bevolking. Duidelijke archeologische sporen van bewoning in het stroomgebied daar noordelijk van ontbreken maar, aangenomen wordt dat de oeverwallen en stroomruggronden wel bewoond waren.

Bij Woerden gaat de Cattenbroekerdijk middels een viaduct over de A12. Een deel van de oorspronkelijke dijk is nog te zien naast de oprit die toegang geeft tot het viaduct, ter hoogte van Cattenbroekerdijk 18. Bij Montfoort loopt de dijk langs de Montfoortse Vaart.
