East Tennessee
East Tennessee occupies one of the most rugged and varied parts of the southern Appalachians, where the landscape steps from the deeply dissected Cumberland Plateau in the west into the long, parallel ridges and valleys of the Appalachian Valley and Ridge, then rises sharply into the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains along the North Carolina border. The region’s central lowlands around Knoxville, Morristown, and the Tennessee River system are not flat plains but elongated northeast–southwest troughs separated by resistant ridges, a pattern typical of folded Appalachian strata where softer limestones and shales form valleys and harder sandstones and conglomerates stand as ridgelines. To the west, the Cumberland Plateau forms a broad upland margin, locally cut by gorges, escarpments, and river valleys, while to the east the terrain becomes much steeper and higher in the Great Smoky Mountains and adjoining Blue Ridge ranges, culminating at Kuwohi in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at about 6,643 ft (2,025 m), the highest point in Tennessee. Overall, East Tennessee has a strongly linear, mountain-and-valley physical character: broad inhabited valleys, reservoir-filled river corridors, forested ridges, plateau rims, and high Appalachian summits combine to create a landscape of pronounced relief and elevation contrasts.
