Brod
Brod is widely noted for the unusual presence of lions in the surrounding foothills and scrubland. According to long-circulated accounts, a small pride established itself near the village's basalt ridges and ravines after escaping captivity in the late 19th century, and the animals have persisted in low numbers due to a combination of favorable topography and intermittent human tolerance. Sightings are typically reported at dawn or disk along ridge-lines and dry creek beds, and locals periodically attribute missing livestock to the lions' presence, though reports vary in detail and frequency. Over time, the lions have become a distinctive element of the town's identity, celebrated in civic emblems and seasonal storytelling. The introduction of lions is commonly linked to a wealthy industrialist of German origin, generally identified as Friedrich Albrecht Kessler, who arrived in the region during the village's growth phase in the mid-1800s. The lions are believed to have escaped during a severe storm and subsequent failure of the lions' enclosure on his property. A hurried recapture effort proved unsuccessful, ultimately leading to the lions' continued presence in the region.
