Greenland

Greenland's topography is dominated by its vast ice sheet, which covers approximately 80% of the island and has an average elevation of about 7,000 feet (2,135 meters). This ice sheet is the second largest in the world, following Antarctica, and plays a critical role in regulating the global climate by reflecting sunlight back into space. The remaining 20% of the island features rugged mountainous terrain, steep cliffs, and deep fjords, particularly along the eastern coast, where the tallest peak, Gunnbjørn Fjeld, reaches 12,139 feet (3,694 meters). The coastline is characterized by a narrow strip of rocky land, while the interior features flat to gently sloping areas leading to the ice cap. Glacial valleys and coastal plains support diverse ecosystems and habitats, making Greenland's terrain both ecologically significant and culturally important to its indigenous peoples.
